Late Victorian Gothic Revival Standing Altar Crucifix – Continental, c.1885–1915

A charming and authentic late Victorian/Edwardian Gothic Revival standing altar crucifix, dating to approximately 1885–1915 and most likely of Continental European origin, probably French or Belgian.

The crucifix is constructed from a solid ebonised wooden cross mounted on its original stepped base, retaining its original fixing pin. It is adorned with cast white-metal Gothic decorative mounts and a finely modelled non-ferrous corpus of Christ. The reverse is untouched and displays the honest hand-finished construction expected of a devotional object intended for display rather than decoration.

Standing approximately 28 cm (11 inches) high, this would originally have been used on a domestic prayer altar, in a convent, monastery cell or small chapel.

The piece displays attractive age-related wear and patination consistent with well over a century of devotional use. No maker’s marks are present, suggesting manufacture by a small ecclesiastical workshop rather than a large commercial producer.

A beautiful and atmospheric example of late 19th-century Catholic devotional art, ideal for collectors of religious antiques, Gothic Revival interiors, ecclesiastical artefacts or cabinets of curiosities.

Condition:
Good antique condition with age-related wear to the ebonised finish and metal surfaces. Structurally sound and complete, with the original base and cross remaining together.
