British Museum Replica of the Early Fifth-Century Crucifixion Ivory Panel

A fascinating official British Museum resin cast reproducing one of the earliest surviving depictions of the Crucifixion in Christian art.

The original ivory panel was carved in Rome around AD 420–430 and formed part of an ornate Christian casket. It is remarkable for combining two pivotal biblical scenes: the death of Judas Iscariot, shown hanging from a tree beneath the thirty pieces of silver, and the Crucifixion of Christ with the Virgin Mary, St John and the Roman soldier Longinus.

Produced by the British Museum as part of its educational cast series, this example retains both its original identification label and the moulded BM maker’s mark, confirming it as an official museum reproduction rather than a later copy.

These museum casts were created to allow students, historians and collectors to study important works of art that would otherwise remain behind glass. Today they have become collectable in their own right, preserving both the appearance of the original masterpiece and the history of museum education during the twentieth century.
