Vintage Miniature Religious Book / Devotional Reliquary Box with Removable Christ Bust

An unusual vintage miniature book-form devotional object, measuring approximately 3.9 cm x 3 cm.

The book features a decorative gilt cross on a deep red enamelled cover, gilt-effect page edges and a cast metal body. Opening the hinged cover reveals a removable bust of Christ wearing the Crown of Thorns, resting within the interior compartment.

This appears to be a Continental European Catholic devotional piece, possibly dating from the early to mid-20th century. It may have been intended as a miniature reliquary, devotional shrine or religious keepsake, although I have been unable to determine its exact origin or purpose.

The piece is unmarked with no visible maker’s marks or hallmarks.
