Large Vintage Mozart Bust – 30cm Plaster Sculpture – After P.P. Caproni Mode

A superb large vintage plaster bust of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, standing approximately 30cm high and 15cm wide.

This is an exceptionally well-modelled example, depicting Mozart in formal 18th-century dress with his characteristic curled hair, high collar, elaborate cravat and detailed coat. The quality of the sculpting is particularly impressive, with crisp detail throughout the hair, facial features, clothing and intricate cravat.

The lower front of the bust is impressed with the name “MOZART”, incorporated into the design.

An interesting piece of sculpture history

During research into this bust, I discovered that it corresponds very closely to a Mozart model documented by P.P. Caproni & Brother. The Caproni Collection records this particular Mozart model as Catalogue ID 6264, dating to 1911, and their present-day collection continues to offer a version of the same model.

The similarities in the facial features, hairstyle, clothing, cravat, buttons and overall form are striking.

Importantly, this particular bust does NOT carry a Caproni hallmark, and therefore it is not being sold as an original P.P. Caproni casting. Instead, it appears to be a very finely executed vintage reproduction of the documented Caproni model.

The bust is remarkably lightweight and has a pleasing resonant sound when tapped, consistent with a plaster/lightweight composition construction.

It has acquired a lovely aged surface with areas of natural discolouration and wear, giving it a wonderful old-world character. There is also old mounting/adhesive residue to the underside from where the bust was previously attached to another support.

A fantastic decorative and collectible piece for anyone interested in Mozart, classical music, sculpture, historic reproductions or cabinet-of-curiosities collections.

At approximately 30cm tall, it has a fantastic presence when displayed.

Condition: Good vintage condition with age-related marks, surface wear and discolouration consistent with its age and previous display. Old mounting residue to the underside. Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.
