Vintage L.N. Fowler Phrenology Head – Ceramic Reproduction – 24cm
Free UK shipping on orders over £50
A fascinating vintage L.N. Fowler phrenology head, produced as a ceramic reproduction of the famous phrenological busts associated with L.N. Fowler.
Standing approximately 24 cm high and 14 cm at its widest point, the head is covered with the traditional phrenological divisions and inscriptions, representing the various faculties that early phrenologists believed could be determined from the shape of the skull.
The base is marked “PHRENOLOGY – L.N. FOWLER”, with Fowler’s explanatory text printed to the reverse.
This is a later reproduction rather than an original 19th-century Fowler head, but it has acquired a lovely amount of age and character, including extensive natural crazing to the ceramic glaze. The crazing gives it a wonderfully aged appearance and makes it particularly attractive as a display piece.
Phrenology is now regarded as a pseudoscience, but these fascinating heads provide an unusual glimpse into the history of Victorian ideas surrounding the brain, personality and human character.
A brilliant cabinet of curiosities piece, medical oddity or conversation starter.
